A congressional source tells CNN that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has been in touch with the White House this week, laying out the case for a government shutdown.
In a Tuesday call, according to a congressional source with knowledge of the discussion, Pelosi told the White House that if the Republican-controlled House and Democratic-controlled Senate don't pass a spending bill that will avert a federal shutdown before the current funding authority runs out at midnight Friday, Democrats would threaten to kill the entire process.
Pelosi, who had a separate call with White House counsel Pat Cipollone on Thursday, offered a similar ultimatum -- either the House and Senate pass a short-term continuing resolution that would fund the government for a few days before the current budget expires Friday or Pelosi will force a government shutdown.
A Pelosi spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the Minority Leader spoke with the White House on Tuesday and offered the same message.
"Leader Pelosi expressed our commitment to the bipartisan agreement negotiated by the Senate to protect Dreamers and prevent a devastating government shutdown," the spokesperson said. "The House Democrats remain committed to passing a clean CR that includes a solution for Dreamers and does not harm the middle class, and that includes funding for strong border security."
A White House spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

A White House official told CNN on Wednesday that the White House continues to believe it can pass a bill with bipartisan support and send it to the Senate -- even if Democrats make good on their threat to filibuster.
The official said the President was not surprised by Pelosi's threat.
"I think it was a little bit of a bluff, in my opinion," the official said, adding that the White House has been in "regular contact" with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has, in the past, indicated he'd like to avoid a shutdown.
